about

Kasson met Elissa when he opened for Kodacrome in Brooklyn with his cinematic downtempo band Symbion Project, and knew immediately that they should collaborate on a song together. "Engine" is a hybrid of Kasson & Elissa's pop sensibilities. The track demonstrates their collective passion for layered melodies, winding synthesized progressions, and ardent belief that sometimes you just have to dance off the sadness.

lyrics

you didn't know it at the time
but i had an engine sputtering within me
and i had a pulse
you could have called it something else
but i had a hope muttering within me

and it wasn't false

he had an orchestra inside of him
quelling the messiah, cutting through the quiet
splitting through the fog
he cast a villain on the timpani
drowning out the hero
sounding an alarm bell

and it wasn't false

two lines in the void running similar directions
can go on forever without making Xs
it's more geometric than it ever was tragic
boxed up like a present from onset to ending

it seemed like such good planning at the time...
